Adrienne Martin

You have a chance to be part of what I am confident will be a life-changing summer for me.  I have the privilege of being selected to serve on the summer staff at Lutherock near Boone, North Carolina.  My summer will be spent witnessing my faith to over 700 children and youth who come to camp to grow in their faith and have fun in a very special intentional Christian Community.

How have you seen God at work so far this summer? "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit." John 15: 1-2

When I reflect about how God has been at work in my summer so far, the image of pruning comes to mind. I am a person who loves possibility; I love to keep all options on the table all of the time. As a chaplain at Lutherock this summer and as a seminarian finishing up my last steps for ordained ministry, I've been in school for years learning about Christian theology and the art of ministry. I have all sorts of notions about ministry and worship as well as some about myself in ministry. This summer has been one of confronting many of these formless ideas and molding them into a means to glorify God. As in pruning when some buds need cut, some of the notions and tendenices I have are less fruitful. I have found in the peace of camp life, these fruitless ideas must be abandoned. More fruitful ones I focus on to bear more fruit.

I can name a few surface level ideas that have proved less fruitful, yet I believe the pruning taking place is much deeper... deeper than my understanding right now. I believe God is transforming me in very important and needed ways. I have felt as though God is saying, "Do it because you are going to need this." I realize I have needed this experience. I believe God has placed me here right now to be transformed by the cleansing and glorious creation; the couselors, whose faith, commitment, and strength, inspire me daily; and the witness to God's transformative presence on this mountain. Lutherock has given me this chance to receive, and the fruit here is blossoming all around!

How has this summer experience impacted your life? I believe I had witnessed important lessons in creation this summer. The trees, the plants, the wildlife, and the bugs are loved as they are. They stand in praise of God. One the mountain trails, I am aware of my exertion on the path. On the river, I see the futility of fighting the current and instead see the value of maneuvering along with it.  All these experiences reveal important insights about God to say that God loves me as I am, my path is striving toward God, and I don’t need to fight the currents of God’s grace, and instead may maneuver along with them. These have been important lessons for me.

To provide Adrienne with salary, room, board, and training, it costs over $2555 for the summer. We know this is worth it as it is the summer staff that have the greatest impact on the campers. We are inviting you to invest in their training. By investing in them, we will send you updates and post updates on this webpage about the ministry they are involved in and how it is impacting their life. Your investment in them frees other funds to provide scholarships and improve the program equipment and facilities. The cost of $2,555 breaks down as follows:

  • $555 provides for 1 counselor's training ($47,175 total cost)
  • $2000 provides for 1 counselor's salary
