Lutheranch's First Campfirmation

6/29/2015

As the very first Campfirmation cluster to spend their week at Lutheranch, Shades Valley Lutheran Church and Shepard of the Hills Lutheran Church, both from Birmingham, Alabama, could not wait to kick off programming at what would be yet another influential source of Lutheran outdoor ministry, a site more commonly known as Lutheranch. Each of these churches, along with the rest of the Southeastern Synod, has been anxiously awaiting programming at Lutheranch since the purchase of the land back in 2007. Three Lutheridge staff were sent to the site to lead the program, and while each of them was very familiar with the campfirmation program at Lutheridge, they were in for an incredible NEW experience at Lutheranch.

A typical day at Lutheranch for Campfirmation started with a Morning Watch (morning devotion to say “good morning, God”) planned by Pastors Dan Dahl and Daryl Kiehl, followed by breakfast (prepared by the pastors) and a teaching session centered around the worship services of the church:  service of marriage, service of healing, funeral service, and service of blessing. Afternoons were filled with counselor-planned programming like lake swimming, movie-nights, card playing, and hikes. Evenings were capped off with Vespers (evening worship) planned by staff, which allowed counselors to share part of their stories and faith journeys with campers. With the capability for everyone to stay under one roof, camp ran very smoothly, and staff was able to connect with campers easily, utilizing the benefits of the Holy Trinity House.

When asked for an over-arching theme to describe the week spent at Lutheranch, Evan Fitzsimmons, Lutheridge Area Director, was unable to pinpoint one thing. There were so many things that defined the week spent in NovusWay’s newest site. Pastor Dan Dahl added, “the counselors were topnotch and connected well with all present.  They were able to creatively express their faith in our Lord Jesus and have fun doing it.” What an incredible example of how we, as the entire ministry of NovusWay, can rejoice in the triumphs and strides made within each site. In this particular instance, we rejoice in the triumph of a week spent in the Lord’s beautiful creation, and the opportunity to be even a small part of these confirmands’ faith stories and the development of this incredible new site.

THANKS to those with a hand in the success of Lutheranch! Watch out for more news on Lutheranch programming coming soon!
